Brightness and runtime together

Runtime depends on the level you use and the battery inside:

  • Max, 300 lumens, 55 m: 4 hours on AAA alkalines, then 16 hours of reserve light; 6 hours on the BD 1500, then 2 hours of reserve.
  • Medium, 150 lumens, 35 m: 8 hours on AAA alkalines; 12 hours on the BD 1500.
  • Low, 6 lumens, 8 m: 140 hours on either.

Low is plenty for reading in the tent or cooking at camp, and at 140 hours it will outlast a week of evenings. Brightness memory switches the Astro 300 back on at the level you last used, so you are not blinded by full power at 2am.

Beam shape

A single lens throws one clean beam that dims smoothly from 300 lumens down to 6. On Max it reaches 55 m, enough to pick out track markers and the next creek crossing on a night walk; on Low it lights the 8 m around your feet without dazzling the people you are camping with. A strobe mode is there for signalling.

Charging and battery

Three AAA alkaline cells come in the box. AAA lithium cells also work. The rechargeable BD 1500 lithium-ion battery and its charger are sold separately and drop into the same compartment. With alkalines fitted the Astro 300 weighs 75 g; with the BD 1500 it is 69.5 g; the lamp alone is 42 g.

Weather resistance

The Astro 300 is rated IPX4 stormproof: it shrugs off rain and sleet from any angle, so an all-night downpour in the Grampians or a wet walk out is no problem. It is built for weather, not for swimming.

Looking after it

Use the digital lock before it goes into a pack or pocket so it cannot switch itself on and drain the batteries. Take the batteries out if it will sit unused between trips, and do not mix old and new cells or different battery types.
