Description

Gear Aid Aquaseal FD Repair Kit is the small clear tube that lives in the wader bag, the dry bag or the PFD pocket for the day a snag turns into a leak. Inside is everything for a proper repair at home or a quick fix on the riverbank: 7 g of Aquaseal +FD urethane adhesive, two Tenacious Tape patches, one clear and one black, an application brush and a step-by-step repair guide.

What it fixes

  • Tears and pinhole leaks in breathable and neoprene waders
  • Leaks in drysuits, dry tops and paddling jackets
  • Punctures in sleeping mats, packrafts and other inflatables
  • Weeping seams and the sock-foot joints on waders

Aquaseal +FD bonds to neoprene, rubber, nylon, GORE-TEX fabric, canvas and vinyl. It cures clear into a flexible rubber that bends with the fabric rather than cracking, and once set the repair handles -29 to 82 °C, from a frosty start on a Tasmanian trout stream to a hot Queensland afternoon.

How to use it

  1. Find the leak. On waders, dab isopropyl alcohol over the suspect area and the hole shows up as a darker spot. On an inflatable, spray soapy water and watch for bubbles. Mark the spot.
  2. Clean and dry the area with isopropyl alcohol. Scuff rubber and other non-fabric surfaces lightly with sandpaper. Disposable gloves make clean-up easy.
  3. Brush a thin layer of Aquaseal +FD over the damage, taking it 13 mm past the hole on every side.
  4. For a quick field fix, let the adhesive go tacky for about 30 minutes, then press a patch over it from the centre out. The patch should reach at least 13 mm past the adhesive onto clean fabric. Round the corners of any patch you trim.
  5. Keep the repair flat. It reaches full strength in 8 to 12 hours.

Work somewhere between 16 and 38 °C, with some humidity in the air. Gear Aid Cure Accelerator brings the cure down to about 2 hours if you have it at home.

Shelf life and storage

To keep a part-used tube fresh, push the adhesive up to the neck, cover the opening with a small piece of foil and screw the cap down over it. Bag the tube and store it in the freezer between trips, then drop it back into the kit tube before you head out. The adhesive is labelled flammable with harmful vapour. Cured Aquaseal peels off fingers, and soap and water clean up the rest.

The Gear Aid Aquaseal FD Repair Kit holds a 7 g tube of Aquaseal +FD adhesive, two Tenacious Tape patches (one clear, one black), an application brush and a repair guide, all packed in a small clear screw-top tube.

How do you repair a leak in breathable waders?
Dab isopropyl alcohol on the waders to show the hole, then clean and dry it. With the Gear Aid Aquaseal FD Repair Kit, patch the outside, turn the waders inside out and brush Aquaseal +FD over the inside, 13 mm past the hole. Leave it 8 to 12 hours.

How long does the Aquaseal FD Repair Kit take to cure?
Aquaseal +FD from the Gear Aid Aquaseal FD Repair Kit fully cures in 8 to 12 hours. For a faster field fix, let the adhesive go tacky for about 30 minutes and press a Tenacious Tape patch over it. Cure Accelerator cuts the full cure to about 2 hours.

Can the Aquaseal FD Repair Kit fix a sleeping mat or packraft?
Yes. The Gear Aid Aquaseal FD Repair Kit is made for inflatables as well as waders. Find the hole with soapy water, apply adhesive 13 mm around it, let it set 30 minutes, then cover it with a patch that reaches 13 mm past the adhesive.

Does Aquaseal FD work on GORE-TEX?
Yes. The Aquaseal +FD adhesive in the Gear Aid Aquaseal FD Repair Kit bonds to GORE-TEX fabric as well as neoprene, rubber, nylon, canvas and vinyl, so it suits breathable waders, dry tops and paddling jackets.

How do you store Aquaseal FD after opening?
Push the remaining Aquaseal +FD up to the neck of the tube, cover the opening with a little foil and cap it. Seal the tube in a plastic bag and keep it in the freezer, then return it to the Aquaseal FD Repair Kit before the next trip.
