Description
The XTM Performance Monsoon Waterproof Hiking Sock is a hiking sock built in three layers: a quick-drying nylon outer, a waterproof and breathable DRYTEC membrane, and a merino blend liner against your skin. It has a regular fit and a 25.5 cm leg, and comes in black in three adult sizes.
Who it's for
Walkers whose feet get wet from the outside: button grass and mud on the Overland Track, creek crossings in the Gold Coast hinterland, a dewy morning start in trail runners, a week of rain on the South Coast Track. The Monsoon goes on in place of your normal hiking sock when the forecast is wet, and it earns its place in the pack as the dry pair you pull on at camp inside wet shoes.
Waterproofing and breathability
The DRYTEC membrane stops water coming through the sock while letting sweat vapour out, so your feet stay dry from both directions. The membrane runs the full height of the sock. Water that comes in over the top of the cuff stays in, so in heavy rain or a deep crossing, wear the Monsoon under gaiters or rain pants that cover the cuff.
Fit and layering
Regular fit: shaped to the foot with a little ease for movement. A three-layer sock is thicker than a standard merino hiker, so try it with the boots or shoes you walk in. Wear it on its own; the merino liner is already built in.
- A2-8 - US 2 to 8, Euro 36 to 39, foot length 23 to 25 cm
- A6-10 - US 6 to 10, Euro 40 to 44, foot length 26 to 28 cm
- A11-14 - US 11 to 14, Euro 45 to 48, foot length 29 to 31 cm
The 25.5 cm leg sits at crew height, above the collar of a mid-cut boot.
Fabric and construction
- Outer - 76% nylon, 14% spandex, 10% polyester. Durable and quick drying.
- Membrane - DRYTEC, waterproof and breathable.
- Inner - 50% merino wool, 30% nylon, 20% acrylic. Warm against the skin.
An average pair weighs 140 g. The Monsoon is a certified carbon neutral product.
Care
Turn the socks inside out and cold machine wash on a gentle or wool cycle with wool detergent. Skip the fabric softener and bleach. Line dry, or tumble dry on cool. Do not iron or dry clean. Give them time to dry, as a membrane sock dries more slowly than a plain wool one.
