Description
The Komperdell FXP Carbon Erlkönig is an ultralight folding trail running pole with a slim 14 mm carbon shaft in three sections. Release it and the FXP mechanism pulls it together on its own. A slim tape grip with changeable non-slip tape, the Fly sport strap and a thin, small fold that fits a conventional quiver make it built for racing and fast mountain days.
Who it's for
The Erlkönig is a trail runner's pole. It is made for the steep, fast stuff: the climbs of Ultra-Trail Australia in the Blue Mountains, the big ascents at the Buffalo Stampede, or a training loop up Mount Coot-tha and back before work. Fold it into the quiver on the flats, and pull it out when the gradient bites.
And yes, it looks the part. The black-and-white Erlkönig tape stands out on any start line.
Weight against durability
Komperdell build the Erlkönig from Carbon Ultralight tubing, 14 mm across, and call it ultralight and ultrafast. A slim carbon pole is made for running and hiking loads, planted ahead of you on climbs and used for balance on descents, and it is worth treating with a little care around rock edges.
Locking and adjustment
There is nothing to fiddle with. The Erlkönig comes in fixed lengths, so you choose your size once. Komperdell's FXP folding mechanism does the rest: pull the pole out of the quiver, let the sections go and it snaps together by itself, ready to run. We stock it from 110 to 135 cm in 5 cm steps. Most runners choose a pole that puts the elbow at about a right angle on flat ground, or a touch shorter for steep climbing.
Packed length
Folded, the Erlkönig has a thin, small packed size that Komperdell say fits a conventional quiver, so it can ride on your back when your hands need to be free for a scramble, a gel or a drink.
Grips and baskets
The Trail Pro Tape grip has a slim shape for direct control. The non-slip tape is changeable: swap in a fresh tape when it wears, or a new colour when you feel like it. The Fly sport strap hooks in and releases, and Komperdell say it gives easy handling and maximum power transmission. A Fly loop strap is available separately if you prefer a classic loop.
Looking after it
After a muddy race, unfold the pole, rinse off grit and let it dry before you fold it away. Check the tape for wear and replace it before it starts to slip.
