Description
The Black Diamond Pursuit Carbon FLZ Trekking Poles are three-section folding carbon poles with FlickLock+ length adjustment and cork grips. The 125 cm size adjusts from 110 to 125 cm and folds to 36 cm; the 135 cm size adjusts from 120 to 135 cm and folds to 39 cm. A pair weighs 490 g or 502 g.
Who it's for
These are poles for people who cover real distance: the full Overland Track, a week on the Australian Alps Walking Track, the Larapinta's long rocky ridgelines, or a fast day up Mount Bogong and back. They come out for the climbs and descents, and fold away quickly for the scrambles and the flat.
Weight against durability
The shafts are all carbon, so the poles are light to swing for hours: 490 g a pair in the 125 cm size and 502 g in the 135 cm. Black Diamond use a wide-diameter shaft here, which Black Diamond say adds durability and stiffness. Carbon is still worth protecting from sharp rock edges.
Locking and adjustment
Two systems work together. The FLZ fold uses Black Diamond's Z-pole construction with speed cone technology for fast, easy deployment and storage. Then the FlickLock+ lever sets the length within each size's range, 110 to 125 cm or 120 to 135 cm. Shorten them for the climb, lengthen them for the descent, and flip the lever shut.
Packed length
Folded, the 125 cm size is 36 cm and the 135 cm size is 39 cm. That slips inside a daypack, onto the side of a pack or across the front of a running vest, so your hands are free for a rock scramble, a ladder or a creek crossing.
Grips and baskets
Natural cork grips provide comfort and manage moisture. Below them, Bloom foam extensions give you somewhere to choke down on a short, steep traverse without stopping to adjust. Breathable air mesh straps keep your wrists comfortable. The carbide tips are replaceable WaveLock tips, and the poles come with snow baskets for winter trips.
Looking after it
After a wet or muddy walk, unfold the poles, rinse off grit and let them dry fully before storing them. Store them away from strong heat, and check the tips for wear before a big trip.
