Description
The Komperdell Carbon FXP.4 Approach Vario is a four-section carbon folding trekking pole that springs open by itself when you release the segments. A Powerlock 3.0 lever adjusts the Carbon FXP.4 Approach Vario from 115 to 135 cm, it folds to 41 cm for the pack, and it weighs 247 g, with a foam grip and quick-change vario baskets.
Who it's for
Walkers who want a pole on the steep bits and off the rest. Approach walks to a climb, scrambles where you need both hands on rock, and long days in Tasmania or the Blue Mountains where the track swaps between boardwalk, ladders and boulder hops. Undo the strap, let the sections drop, and it clicks together ready to walk. The 115-135 cm range suits average to taller walkers, and gives you room to shorten it for the descent and lengthen it for the climb.
Weight against durability
All four sections are carbon, 18 mm at the top tapering to 16 mm, which keeps the pole light in the hand and easy to swing all day. The Carbon FXP.4 Approach Vario weighs 247 g. Carbon is stiff and light; treat it well around rock edges and it will look after you for a long time.
Locking and adjustment
Two things hold the pole together. The FXP fold joins each segment with a solid mechanical connection, so the sections do not rely on a loose cord to stay aligned. The Powerlock 3.0 lever, forged from aluminium and Komperdell's strongest lock, sets the length anywhere from 115 to 135 cm. Flip it open, slide, close it, and you are done, even with gloves on.
Packed length
Folded, the pole is 41 cm and held together with its velcro strap. That slips inside a daypack or into a side pocket, which is what you want on a scramble or when you hop on a bus at the end of a through-walk.
Grips and baskets
The Trek Pro Foam 245 grip is light and soft in the hand, and the Comfort Padded strap is gentle on the wrist over a long day. Vario baskets swap quickly, so you can change them to suit the ground.
Looking after it
Dry and clean the pole after each trip and store it with the Powerlock open. Never put lubricant on the shaft or the lock, and never extend it past the maximum length mark.
