Description
The Komperdell FX Lite Carbon Vario Approach Compact is a folding trekking pole built for the walk in to a climb or a big day on rough ground. It springs open by itself, locks with a click, and adjusts from 105 to 125 cm, so it is set for shorter walkers and packs down to 40 cm for the times you need both hands on the rock.
Who it's for
Walkers who want a pole that disappears into the pack between uses: scrambling approaches in the Blue Mountains, the rocky steps of the Main Range, or a long day in Tasmania where the track keeps swapping from boardwalk to boulders. The Compact length band suits shorter walkers and anyone who likes to choke down on a pole on steep ground.
Weight against durability
The four sections mix 7075-T6 aluminium, at 18 mm, with carbon at 16 mm. Aluminium brings toughness for knocks against rock, carbon trims the weight and swing, and Komperdell list the pole at 230 g.
Locking and adjustment
Length is set with a Powerlock 3.0 lever clamp made from forged aluminium, Komperdell's strongest lock. Flip it open, slide to anywhere from 105 to 125 cm, and close it. The fold itself runs on Komperdell's FX Lite mechanism: pull the sections out and they draw together and click home on their own.
Packed length
Folded, the pole is 40 cm, short enough to slide down the side pocket of a daypack or stow inside it for a hands-on section, then pull out again the moment the ground eases.
Grips and baskets
The Trek Pro 245 grip has an extended grip zone below the handle, so you can shorten your hold on a steep traverse without stopping to adjust the length. The Comfort Padded Strap is soft against the wrist on a long day.
Looking after it
Dry and clean the pole after each trip, store it with the Powerlock open, and never lubricate the shaft or lock. Do not extend past the maximum length mark.
