Frequently Asked Questions
For a flat kit only, 0.3 to 1.1 L is enough: a tube, tyre levers, a mini tool and a key. Add a rain jacket and food for a long day and look at 2 to 7 L. For overnight bikepacking with a sleeping bag, choose 10 L or more; 14 to 18 L suits colder trips with bulkier gear.
Measure from the saddle rails to the top of the rear tyre with the saddle at riding height. The Topeak Backloader needs more than 22 cm, the Backloader X 23 cm, and the Restrap 14 L and 18 L need 240 and 260 mm. Small frames, full-suspension bikes and 29ers are the ones to check.
Sometimes. The USWE Roll-Top Saddle Bag works with a dropper if you mount it high enough for full travel. Otherwise, the Topeak DP Mount clamps to the upper post of a 22 to 27 mm dropper, or move your spares to a downtube or frame bag.
Many are. The Topeak Backloader has a 10,000 mm inner dry bag, the Restrap dry bag is rated IP6K6, and EVOC's Seat Pack WP and BOA WP bags have welded seams and roll-top closures. Small zip bags like the Deuter Bike Bags are weather resistant rather than waterproof, so wrap a phone or cash in a zip-lock bag.
How to choose a bike saddle bag
• Size it to the ride:How to choose a bike saddle bag
• Size it to the ride: 0.3 to 1.1 L carries a tube, levers and a mini tool (Deuter Bike Bag 0.5, Lezyne S-Caddy, Topeak Burrito Pack). 2 to 7 L adds a rain jacket and lunch (EVOC Seat Pack WP 2 and 4, BOA WP 6, Ultra WP 4 and 7). 9 to 18 L is a bikepacking seat pack for the sleeping bag and camp clothes.
• Measure the clearance: a big seat pack needs room between the saddle and the rear tyre. The Topeak Backloader asks for more than 22 cm there and 12 cm of exposed seatpost; the Restrap 14 L needs 240 mm and the 18 L 260 mm. Small frames and 29ers are the ones to check.
• Holster or one piece: the Backloader, Restrap Saddle Bag + Dry Bag and Deuter Mondego SB 16 use a harness that stays on the bike while the dry bag comes into the tent. EVOC's BOA WP bags are one piece and lock on with a dial.
• Dropper post: the USWE Roll-Top Saddle Bag works with a dropper if you mount it high enough to keep full travel.
• Stop the sway: the Backloader Wishbone bolts to the saddle rails and braces Backloader bags under 18 cm wide.

Bikepacking saddle bags on Australian trails
For an overnighter on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, a 10 L seat pack takes a sleeping bag and a change of clothes. For a week on the Munda Biddi or the Mawson Trail, a 15 to 18 L bag plus a frame bag and a handlebar bag spreads the load across the bike. Pack heavy, dense gear in the frame and keep the saddle bag for light, bulky kit.
