Frequently Asked Questions
A bar roll is a long dry bag, often in a harness, that carries light, bulky gear such as a sleeping bag or tent on a bikepacking trip. A smaller handlebar bag holds what you need during the ride: phone, snacks, a jacket. Some riders run both, like a Topeak Barloader strapped over a Frontloader.
Usually, but check two things. The bag must fit between the drops without blocking your hands or levers, and it needs clearance above the front tyre. Smaller bags like the Restrap Canister Bag or Topeak Tubular Barbag Slim suit drop bars well, and Restrap recommend 120 mm between the bars and tyre for the Canister Bag.
The bikepacking ones are. The Topeak Frontloader dry bag is rated 10,000 mm, the Restrap Bar Pack is IP6K6, and the EVOC handlebar packs are WP models with roll-top closures. Small zip bags and stem bags are water resistant, so keep a phone or wallet in a zip-lock bag in heavy rain.
A stem bag straps beside your stem so food, gels or a bottle sit within reach while you ride. You can eat little and often on long rides without stopping or digging through a jersey pocket. The Restrap Stem Bag and Race Stem Bag hold 1.1 L and the USWE Food Pouch 1.4 L.
How to choose a handlebar bag
• Harness and dry bag:How to choose a handlebar bag
• Harness and dry bag: for a bikepacking trip, a big bar roll carries light, bulky gear. The Topeak Frontloader is a harness with a removable 12 L dry bag rated 10,000 mm and a 5 kg limit. The EVOC Handlebar Pack BOA WP 9 mounts without tools on a BOA dial and opens from either end.
• One bag that opens on the bike: the Restrap Bar Pack has two IP6K6 roll-top compartments on a hard-shell back, so you get into it at every stop.
• Small bar bags for day rides: the 6.5 L Topeak Barloader rides alone or on top of a Frontloader; the Restrap Canister Bag (1.5 L) and Topeak Tubular Barbag Slim (1.5 L) take a phone, keys and a snack. Deuter's Mondego HB 8 is an 8 L bar bag for weekend touring.
• Check the clearance: a bar bag needs space between the bars and the tyre, and room for your brake and gear cables. Restrap recommend 120 mm under the Canister Bag. Drop bars narrow the space for a long roll.
• Aero bars: the EVOC Aero Bar Pack WP 5 mounts under aero bars and has a cable port for charging on the go.
Stem bags and food pouches
A stem bag sits beside the stem and holds food, gels or a bottle within reach. The Restrap Stem Bag and Race Stem Bag hold 1.1 L; the USWE Food Pouch holds 1.4 L and closes with a drawstring. Restrap's Food Pouch clips to the front of a Restrap bar bag on magnetic mounts.
Bar bags for Australian riding
On a hot gravel day in the Scenic Rim or a long day on the Mawson Trail, a stem bag full of food means you eat every half hour without stopping. For a multi-day trip on the Munda Biddi, a bar roll carries the sleeping bag, while the frame bag takes the heavy kit and the saddle bag the clothes.
