Mondego HB 8

The Deuter Mondego HB 8 is a handlebar bag that turns a gravel or road bike into a weekend tourer. Snacks, a rain jacket and the phone go up front where you can reach them, and the bag goes on and off without a single tool.

Who it's for

Riders getting into bikepacking and touring: a first overnighter on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, a long gravel loop through the Adelaide Hills, or a supported tour where you want the day's essentials on the bars. Deuter rate it five out of five for road and gravel riding and touring, and four for bikepacking.

Fitting it to your bike

Two hook-and-loop straps wrap the handlebar and a third strap stops the bag twisting down onto the head tube or front wheel. Four spacers hold it out from the bar so it clears your hands, cables and drop-bar hoods, and let you set it up on different handlebar shapes and diameters. Check you have room between the bar and the front tyre before you load it, and protect the bar and head tube with frame tape where the straps sit, because grit under any strap can dull paint over time.

Capacity and what fits

8 litres holds a rain shell, a warm layer, lunch and a tube and tools in the zipped main compartment, with the recommended 1-3 kg load keeping the steering light. The bag measures 15 x 32 x 17 cm. Two stretch side pockets, one zipped, hold a phone and snacks, and the bungee cord on top takes a jacket or map you want to hand.

Weatherproofing

The main body is 420D polyamide with a double PU coating rated to a 1500 mm water column, so passing showers and road spray bead off. The main compartment closes with a zip; on a long wet day, pack anything that must stay dry in a dry bag inside.

Stability when loaded

The anti-twist strap is what keeps the bag square on rough gravel descents. Keep the heaviest items at the back, close to the bar, and stay within the 1-3 kg recommended load so the bag does not bounce on corrugations.
