The Topeak Backloader is a bikepacking seat bag in 6 L, 10 L or 15 L. It straps to your saddle rails and seatpost with no rack on the bike, keeps your gear in a waterproof inner bag rated to 10,000 mm, and carries up to 5 kg behind the saddle.

Who it's for

Riders who want their overnight kit on the bike and off their back. The 6 L is a big day-ride bag for a gravel loop through the Gold Coast hinterland; the 10 L and 15 L are overnighter and multi-day bags for trips like the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail or the Munda Biddi. With no rack to bolt on, the Backloader moves between your gravel bike and your mountain bike in a couple of minutes.

Fitting it to your bike

Hook-and-loop straps wrap the seatpost and buckled straps loop over the saddle rails. Measure two things before you choose:

  • More than 22 cm from the underside of your saddle to the top of the rear tyre
  • More than 12 cm of exposed seatpost between the saddle clamp and the frame

On a small frame or a bike with a low saddle, that first measurement is the one to check. We'd put a strip of protective tape on the seatpost where the strap sits, so trail grit does not mark the finish.

Capacity and what fits

  • 6 L - up to 50 x 16 x 15 cm. Rain jacket, warm layer, food and a spare tube for a long day out.
  • 10 L - up to 60 x 20 x 18 cm. A sleeping bag or quilt and a change of clothes for a fast overnighter.
  • 15 L - up to 67 x 28 x 18 cm. Sleeping bag, mat and camp clothes together for longer trips.

The length is the bag at full stretch; roll the top down further and it shortens to suit a smaller load. All three sizes carry up to 5 kg. We'd pack the soft, bulky, light gear here and keep tools and water lower on the bike. A bungee cord across the top grabs the jacket you keep taking on and off.

Weatherproofing

Your gear goes in the waterproof inner bag, rated to 10,000 mm, which slides out of the Backloader so you can carry it into the tent and leave the outer on the bike. Press the air release button after you roll the top and the trapped air escapes, so the load packs down tight. The outer is polyethylene and nylon, water repellent and stain resistant, with a roll-top closure.

Stability when loaded

Compression straps pull the load in towards the saddle, which cuts the side-to-side swing a full seat bag can build up when you stand on the pedals. A clip on the tail holds a rear light where following traffic can see it.
