Frequently Asked Questions
For short stops where the bike stays in sight, yes. A cable deters the opportunist, but it can be cut, so Kryptonite and ABUS both pitch their cables at low theft risk. For a bike left for hours in a public rack, lock the frame with a U-lock or chain and use the cable for the wheels and helmet.
Locking the small things your main lock misses. The Kryptonite R2 Retractor pulls a 90 cm cable out of a palm-sized four-dial combination body and snaps it back at the press of a button. Loop it through a helmet, a quick-release wheel or seatpost, or a pannier left on the rack.
A combination lock means no key to lose on a ride, and the whole family can use one lock; the ABUS Numero 5510C and KryptoFlex 1018 let you set your own code. A key lock like the ABUS Microflex 6615K suits riders who prefer not to fumble dials with cold or gloved fingers.
How to choose a bike cable lock
• Combination or key:How to choose a bike cable lock
• Combination or key: a combination cable has no key to lose and is easy to share. The ABUS Numero 5510C is a 180 cm, 10 mm coil cable with a resettable code and a frame bracket; the KryptoFlex 1018 is 180 cm of 10 mm braided steel with a four-digit head.
• Armoured cable: the ABUS Microflex 6615K sheathes a steel cable in overlapping steel shells, tougher than a plain cable but still flexible. ABUS rate it Security Level 5 of 15, at 580 g with a frame bracket.
• Retractable: the Kryptonite R2 Retractor winds a 90 cm cable into a palm-sized combination body, 0.18 kg, for a helmet, quick-release wheel or a bag left on the rack.
• Length: 180 cm reaches round a wide post and through both wheels; 85 to 90 cm is lighter and fine for frame to rack.
When a cable is not enough
Cables are deterrents. Kryptonite rate the KryptoFlex 1018 at 1 out of 10, and ABUS build the Numero for low theft risk. For a bike left for hours, lock the frame with something harder and use the cable for the extras:
• the Kryptonite Evolution Mini-9 U-lock, Sold Secure Bicycle Gold, 13 mm shackle
• the Kryptonite Keeper 510 folding lock, 100 cm, Sold Secure Bicycle Bronze
Cable locks for travel and quick stops
On a rail trail tour or a family ride, a cable lock lives in the bar bag for the bakery stop and the campground bike rack. Set your own code on the Numero or KryptoFlex 1018 before the trip, and keep a note of it somewhere other than the lock. At a busy station or the uni rack, add a U-lock. See all bike locks, including ABUS chains and Bordo folding locks.
