Description
The ABUS Numero 5510C Combo SCMU is a 180 cm coil cable lock with a resettable combination, a plastic-coated 10 mm spiral cable and a snap-in bracket that carries it on the frame. It weighs 508 g, coils up small, and has no key to lose, which makes it an easy lock for a family to share.
How secure it actually is
ABUS builds the Numero 5510C for low theft risk: a child's bike outside school, an entry-level bike at the corner shop, a quick coffee stop where the bike stays in sight, or a second lock to secure a wheel or helmet alongside a heavier main lock. For a bike left for hours in the city, pair it with a D-lock or chain.
Weight against security
At 508 g it is light enough to leave on the bike every day, which is what a lock for quick stops needs to be. The spiral cable coils down to a compact bundle, and the bracket carries it on the frame so it is never left at home.
What it locks to
180 cm of cable reaches a long way: round the frame and a front wheel and a bike rack together, through two kids' bikes at once, or round a power pole or a thick tree at the trailhead. The plastic coating protects the paintwork where the cable rubs against the frame.
Keys and mounting
There are no keys. You set your own combination, so the whole family can use the same code. Two-component number reels keep the digits legible as the lock ages, and dark-touch imprinting on the dial makes the numbers easier to find by feel when you are unlocking after dark.
The SCMU bracket fits a seat post, frame tube or rack stay from 15 to 55 mm in diameter. It fixes on with straps and no tools, and the lock clicks into it for the ride home.
Looking after it
Wipe road grime off the dial after wet rides and turn the number reels now and then so they stay free. Keep a note of your combination somewhere safe at home.
