Frequently Asked Questions

Allow about 1 L to 1.3 L for one person, 2 L for two and 3 L for three or four. A solo walker on dehydrated meals only needs enough water for the meal and a hot drink. Groups who cook from scratch do better with two pots, so the pasta and sauce cook at the same time.

Yes, if you cook rather than only boil water. Food that catches on a bare aluminium base is hard to clean with cold creek water and a scrubber. Sea to Summit's Frontier pots use a PTFE-free ceramic non-stick, and Optimus Terra pots are non-stick coated hard-anodised aluminium.

The Crux runs on screw-on gas cartridges filled with a butane, isobutane and propane mix that meet EN417. Optimus recommend their own cartridges. A 230 g cartridge fits inside the Crux Weekend kit's mesh bag. Cartridges are sold separately, and the stove is for outdoor use only.

How to choose camping pots and pans

• Size by people: a 1 L to 1.3 L pot suits one person; 2 L feeds two; 3 L handles three or four. The Frontier Ultralight Pots come in all three sizes, from 208 g for the 1.3 L.

• Non-stick: every pot and pan here has a non-stick coating over hard-anodised aluminium. Sea to Summit's Frontier range uses a PTFE-free ceramic coating.

• Heat exchanger: Optimus HE pots have a finned base that Optimus say cuts boil time and saves gas. The Terra Xpress HE holds 1.75 L for two or three people.

• Lids that strain: Frontier lids have strainer holes, and the Terra Xpress has a built-in strainer, so pasta water pours off without a colander.

• Frying: the Frontier Ultralight Pan is 20 cm with deep sides, for eggs, pancakes and stir-fries.

Our one stove kit: Optimus Crux Weekend

The Crux Weekend Cook System is a stove and cookware in one: the Optimus Crux gas burner (3000 W), a 0.95 L non-stick saucepan, a fry pan that doubles as the lid, and a canister stand. The kit weighs 372 g and nests in its mesh bag with space for a 230 g gas cartridge. It runs on screw-on butane, isobutane and propane mix cartridges (EN417), which you buy separately. Use it outdoors only, never inside a tent or vestibule.

Cooking for a group

On a shared trip, two pots save time: pasta in the 3 L and sauce in the 1.3 L of the Frontier Ultralight Two Pot Set (571 g). Solo walkers on dehydrated meals can get by with one small pot. For more pots, cook sets, kettles and cutlery, see camp cookware and camping cutlery and tableware.
