Description

Tailwind Fava Recovery Mix is a vegan after-exercise drink powder with 20 g of protein from fava bean and brown rice, 34 g of carbohydrate and electrolytes in every 60 g serve. Shake one stick, or three level scoops, into 475 ml of water and drink it within 30 minutes of finishing. It comes in Chocolate, Vanilla, Salted Caramel and Strawberry.

What it is and when to use it

A recovery drink for the end of a long run, ride or paddle, when you are cooked, not hungry, and still an hour from a proper meal. Tailwind built it around three things: 20 g of complete plant protein (fava and brown rice protein topped up with BCAAs, including 2 g of leucine), carbohydrate to restock what you burned, and the electrolytes sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Drink it in the first 30 minutes after you stop, then follow it with balanced meals including carbohydrates and protein over the next 24 hours.

  • Per 60 g serve: 920 kJ (220 kcal), 20 g protein, 34 g carbohydrate.
  • Dietary: vegan, dairy free, gluten free and soy free.
  • Formats: single-serve stick, or a 20-serve bag for the pantry.

Taste and texture

Mixed with plain water it comes out smooth, creamy and milkshake-like, and it needs no blender. Shaken hard in a bottle it froths up; that is normal for this formula, and a gentler shake keeps the foam down. After a cold morning session in the Snowies or a winter dawn paddle, try it with hot water as a warming drink.

Sodium and what varies by flavour

  • Chocolate: 500 mg sodium per serve, made with Dutch-process cocoa.
  • Vanilla: 500 mg sodium per serve.
  • Strawberry: 500 mg sodium per serve.
  • Salted Caramel: 560 mg sodium per serve, with organic salted caramel flavour.

Energy, protein and carbohydrate are the same in all four flavours, so pick the one you will actually look forward to at the end of a hard day.

How to take it

  1. Pour one stick, or three level scoops, into a bottle.
  2. Add 475 ml of water, cold or hot.
  3. Shake gently and drink within 30 minutes of finishing.

You can mix it before a race and leave it in your drop bag or esky; Tailwind recommends drinking it the same day for the best flavour and keeping it in a cool or cold place.

Looking after it

Close the bag after every scoop and keep it somewhere cool and dry.
