Description

The Mammut 9.5 Crag Classic Rope is a 9.5 mm single rope made for the climbing most people do most weekends: gym sessions and sport routes on dry rock. It is a polyamide rope with an untreated Classic finish, a hard-wearing sheath and a centre mark that stays visible, in 60, 70 or 80 m.

Who it's for

Sport climbers first. Mammut rates it six out of six for sport climbing, and the Classic range is its untreated all-rounder for the gym and for rock in fair weather, which makes it a natural first rope. Take it from the lead wall to a weekend clipping bolts at Nowra, the Grampians or Frog Buttress without changing anything.

Diameter and what it suits

At 9.5 mm the Crag Classic is certified as a single rope, so it is the only rope you need for lead and top-rope. It is slim enough to feed quickly when you are clipping and thick enough to wear well on gym walls and top-rope sessions. Pair it with a belay device rated for 9.5 mm single ropes.

Handling and impact force

  • Impact force: 8.2 kN
  • Stretch on first fall: 33%
  • Static elongation: 7.5%
  • Sheath proportion: 42%

Impact force is the peak load the rope passes to you and your gear in a hard fall. The sheath makes up 42% of the rope, which is where the wear goes when it runs over edges and through quickdraws, lap after lap.

Dry treatment

The Crag Classic is untreated and PFC-free: no water-repellent coating on the sheath or the core. That is the Classic idea, a straightforward rope for indoor walls and dry rock days, with nothing to wear off. It is made with solution-dyed yarn and carries the bluesign PRODUCT label.

Fall rating

The 9.5 Crag Classic holds 6 UIAA falls with an 80 kg mass as a single rope.

Length and weight

Every length weighs 58 g per metre. Choose 60 m for gym walls and most single-pitch sport routes, or 70 m and 80 m for the reach to lower off longer pitches with rope to spare. The abrasion-resistant centre mark lets you find the middle quickly when setting up a lower-off.

Looking after it

Keep the rope out of the sun and away from chemicals when you store it, flake it into a rope bag at the crag, and check the sheath by hand for flat spots or core showing through after any big fall or edge contact.
