Sea to Summit Ground Control Tent Pegs are three-sided aluminium tent pegs sold as a set of eight, cut from anodised 7075-T6 alloy and packed in their own Ultra-Sil peg bag. Each one is 18 cm long and weighs 14 g.
What it does
A Ground Control peg holds your guy line where you put it. The three-sided profile bites into the soil on every face, so it stays planted in the soft sand of a coastal campsite and still survives being tapped into the packed, stony ground you find on the Larapinta or a high country fire trail.
Hard ground is where the notches earn their keep. When a peg stops halfway down, run the guy line to one of the lower notches instead of the top. The load then sits close to the ground, the peg is far less likely to lever itself out overnight, and you are not stuck hunting for a softer spot in the dark.
When it is time to pack up, each peg has a reflective cord and a pull loop that glows. Hook a finger or another peg through the loop and it comes straight up, and the glow means the last peg in the grass is easy to spot with a head torch.
Which tents it fits
Any tent, tarp or shelter that pegs out with loops, rings or guy lines. These are general replacement pegs rather than a part matched to one model, so they suit a new ultralight tent, an older tent whose original pegs have bent, or a tarp that needs a few more points. We'd keep a couple of spares in the pack for exposed sites where you want every guy line out.
Weight and packed size
At 14 g a peg, a full set barely registers in a pack. The pegs travel together in a CORDURA Ultra-Sil drawstring bag, which keeps sharp tips and grit away from your tent body, and the bag measures 29 x 2 x 12 cm packed.
