Description

The Nemo Hornet OSMO is a semi-freestanding three-season backpacking tent with a minimum weight from 822 g in the one-person version. It uses Nemo's OSMO fabric, which the brand states has three times less wet stretch than standard nylon, on a single-hub DAC Featherlite pole. The two- and three-person versions have two doors and two vestibules.

Who it's for

Walkers who want a genuinely light tent without going to a trekking-pole shelter. At 948 g minimum weight for the 2P, this is in the same weight class as many one-person tents, and it still gives two people their own door and vestibule.

Less suited to exposed alpine campsites and sustained high wind - it is a three-season tent with a minimal pole structure, and semi-freestanding means the foot end needs stakes to stand properly. On solid rock platforms or tent decks, that matters.

Key features

  • OSMO fabric - Nemo's poly-nylon ripstop, which they rate at three times less wet stretch than standard nylon and with lifetime water repellency, so the fly does not sag as badly overnight in rain.
  • Single-hub DAC Featherlite pole - one pole assembly, so pitching is quick and there is nothing to work out in the dark.
  • Flybar pole clip on the 1P and 2P adds volume at the head end and spreads fly tension. The 3P does not use it.
  • Two doors and two vestibules on the 2P and 3P, so nobody climbs over anybody at 2am.
  • Divvy Cube stuff sack - rectangular rather than a tube, so it packs flat in the bottom of a pack and the load can be split between two people.
  • Nightlight Pockets overhead use light-diffusing fabric, turning a headlamp into a room light.
  • Gatekeeper door clips hold the door open and out of the way rather than leaving it flapping.

Choosing a size

The 1P has one door and one vestibule and 1.9 sq m of floor. The 2P steps up to 2.6 sq m with two doors, at 948 g minimum weight. The 3P is 3.7 sq m with 111 cm of peak height rather than 98 cm, which is the version where sitting up properly becomes comfortable. Weight per person drops as capacity rises, so a 2P shared between two walkers is lighter each than two 1P tents.

Additional Information

HORNET OSMO

  • High-performance, proprietary OSMO™ poly-nylon ripstop fabric has 4x better water repellency and 3x less stretch when wet. OSMO fabric is made from 100% recycled yarns that are PFAS-free and meet flame retardancy standards without the use of added chemicals.
  • Large doors and vestibules provide ample gear coverage for each person.
  • Patent-pending Flybar™ volumizing pole clip adds more room at the head and distributes fly tension evenly. (3P does not include Flybar.)
  • Volumizing guy-outs connect the inner tent to the rainfly, pulling the sidewalls outward to create more livable space.
  • DAC Featherlite® NSL poles boast minimal weight and connect with a single hubbed intersection for lightning-quick setup.
  • Single-handedly tie back the tent door with integrated Gatekeeper™ clips.
  • Bluesign® approved floor material meets strict ecological and chemical requirements and has been produced with a minimum impact on people and the planet.
  • White no-see-um mesh at the side increases privacy, while black mesh at the top turns virtually transparent at night for clear stargazing.
  • Triangulated volumizing guy-outs and struts at corners increase volume at the foot, protecting sleeping bags from tent wall condensation.
  • Nightlight Pockets™ turn your headlamp into a tent lantern while removing blue light and casting an even glow.
  • Divvy Cube™ rectangular stuff sack allows you to still split the weight with your partner but stows more efficiently in your pack.
  • Protected by NEMO two (2) years warranty only.

FAQ's

1. Do you need a footprint for Nemo Hornet Ultralight?
While all of Nemo’s tents can be used without a footprint, we highly recommend using their purpose-made Nemo Hornet footprint addition with your tent set-up. Doing this reduces the risks of snags and tears in the floor of the tent as well as adding an additional layer of protection against moisture. Using a footprint adds to both the longevity of your tent as well as your comfort.

2. What are the footprint dimensions for Nemo Hornet Ultralight?
The footprint or floor area dimensions for the Nemo Hornet Ultralight are: - 222 x 108/79 cm with a floor area of 2.1 SQM for the one-person tent - 215 x 130/108 with a floor area of 2.6 SQM for their two-person tent

3. Is Nemo Hornet Ultralight waterproof?
Made using a premium 10D Nylon Ripstop fly that has a silicone water repellent, the Nemo Hornet is both lightweight and waterproof.

4. Does the Nemo Hornet Ultralight tent have a lifetime warranty?
No, while a lifetime warranty is often honoured overseas, in Australia, all Nemo products come with a 2-year warranty that covers any manufacturing defects affecting usage. The warranty doesn’t cover general wear and tear, improper use or maintenance, misuse, or neglect. If you need to make a warranty claim, Nemo is known for handling these quickly and efficiently.

5. Hornet vs Hornet Elite: What's the difference?
Both the Hornet and the Hornet Elite are exceptional tents for those seeking a lightweight option, the main differences between them (as based on the two-person tent) are as follows:

Weight
- The Hornet Elite is the lighter of the two. The packed weight of the Hornet is 1.08kg compared to just 935 grams for the Elite.

Durability
- The Elite has a lesser denier material than the Hornet making it less dense and therefore less durable. Both tents are equally waterproof, but the thinner fabric of the Elite as well as its higher mesh ratio means it cannot perform as well as the Hornet in wind and rain.

Waterproofing
- While the fly fabrics of both tents are equally waterproof, the density of the Hornets fabric still means it will perform better in wet conditions. As mentioned in an earlier FAQ, neither tent comes with a footprint - this is purchased separately but greatly contributes to better waterproofing.

Dimensions
- The Hornet offers slightly more height and floor space than the Elite. The Hornet delivers 2.6 SQM of floor space whereas the Dragonfly offers 2.5 SQM of floor space.

Is the Nemo Hornet OSMO freestanding?
The Hornet OSMO is semi-freestanding. The head end stands on its own hubbed pole, but the foot end must be staked out to hold its shape. On soft ground that is no issue; on rock platforms or wooden tent decks you will need rocks or deadman anchors to pitch it properly.

How much does the Nemo Hornet OSMO weigh?
Minimum weight is 822 g for the 1P, 948 g for the 2P and 1.28 kg for the 3P. Packed weight, which includes stakes, guylines and the stuff sack, is 1.02 kg, 1.14 kg and 1.49 kg respectively. Minimum weight is the figure used for comparing tents; packed weight is what actually goes in your pack.

What is OSMO fabric and is it better than nylon?
OSMO is Nemo's poly-nylon ripstop. Nemo rates it at three times less wet stretch than standard nylon with lifetime water repellency, which in practice means the fly sags less overnight in rain and needs re-tensioning less often. It is used on both the rainfly and the floor of the Hornet.

Does the Nemo Hornet have two doors?
The 2P and 3P versions have two doors and two vestibules, so each person has their own entry and gear storage. The 1P has a single door and vestibule. For two people sharing, the second door is the feature most worth paying for on a tent this light.

Which size Hornet OSMO should two people buy?
The 2P at 2.6 sq m suits two walkers who pack light and do not mind being close. Two people wanting room to sit up and store gear inside are better off in the 3P, which adds a square metre of floor and raises peak height from 98 cm to 111 cm for 330 g more.
