Frequently Asked Questions
Repair tape or patches that suit your tent fabric, a small tube of seam sealer, a length of shock cord, spare guy line and a needle and thread. Gear Aid's Seam Grip WP Field Repair Kit covers the adhesive and patches. Add silnylon patches if your tent has a silicone-coated fly.
Check how the webbing is fixed. If it is sewn into a loop, use a snap bar buckle like the Gear Aid Snap Bar Repair Buckle, which opens on one side to slip on. If the webbing has a loose end, a Dual Adjust Buckle threads on. Match the buckle width to your webbing.
Usually, yes. When a zip splits behind the slider, the teeth are often fine and the slider has worn or spread. The Gear Aid Zipper Repair Kit has six coil and VISLON sliders, top stops and instructions; you also need pliers. If teeth are missing or the tape is torn, the zip needs replacing.
The shock cord inside has lost its stretch. Pull out the old cord, thread new elastic shock cord through each section, tension it so the sections pull together firmly, and tie it off at the end tips. Gear Aid Elastic Shock Cord is 3 mm and 213 cm long.
What goes in a tent repair kit
• Tear in the fly or floor:What goes in a tent repair kit
• Tear in the fly or floor: Tenacious Tape patches. Use Silnylon Patches on silicone-coated tents, because standard tape won't grip them, and Mesh Patches on an inner door that lets the mozzies in.
• Leaking seam or pinhole: the Seam Grip WP Field Repair Kit: a 7 g tube of urethane adhesive, two Tenacious Tape patches and a brush in a twist tube.
• Pole that falls apart: Elastic Shock Cord, 213 cm of 3 mm cord to restring a pole.
• Snapped guy line: the Taut Line Kit, 15.2 m of reflective 550 paracord with four tensioners.
• Peeling floor coating: Seam Grip + TF, a water-based urethane recoat with its own foam applicator, for a home job rather than the track.
Backpack and clothing repair kit
Most pack failures are a buckle, a zip or a strap. The Snap Bar Repair Buckle opens on one side to fit a sewn-in loop; the Dual Adjust Buckle Kit threads onto loose webbing. The Zipper Repair Kit replaces a worn slider, the usual reason a zip splits behind the pull. The Sewing Kit is 45 g with heavy-duty needles and thread. For jackets, Tenacious Tape Mini Patches come in a slim case: three black nylon and three clear.
For Australian trips
On a multi-day walk like the Overland Track or the Australian Alps Walking Track, pack the Field Repair Kit, a strip of Tenacious Tape, a mesh patch, a spare buckle and a sewing kit in a small bag. Paddlers should carry the Aquaseal FD Repair Kit for waders, drysuits and packrafts. For cleaning and reproofing, see gear repair and care.
