Frequently Asked Questions
Most are. A standard cage bolts to the two bottle bosses on your frame and holds a standard bike bottle. Check the bottle width: Topeak's Tri-Cage suits 72 to 74 mm bottles and the Dualside Cage Pro 72 to 75 mm. Small and dual suspension frames may need a side entry cage to get the bottle out.
It lets you pull the bottle out sideways instead of straight up. On dual suspension bikes and small frames the shock or top tube blocks a top-loading bottle. The Topeak Ninja Master+ Cage SK comes in left and right hand versions, and the Lezyne Matrix Team and Matrix Air cages load from either side.
With a rear mount that clamps to the saddle rails. The Topeak Tri-Backup Pro V fits saddles whose rails narrow into a V, carries one or two bottles up to 750 cc in Tri-Cages, and holds up to 2.5 kg. Its shape forms a hook, so the bike also hangs from the transition rack by the saddle.
How to choose a bike bottle cage
• Top or side entry:How to choose a bike bottle cage
• Top or side entry: a standard cage like the Ninja Master+ Cage Z (35 g) loads from the top. On a dual suspension bike or a small frame the shock or top tube gets in the way, so a side entry cage helps: the Ninja Master+ Cage SK comes in left and right hand versions, and the Lezyne Matrix Team Cage loads from either side.
• Bottle size: most cages take a standard bike bottle. Topeak's Tri-Cage takes bottles up to 750 cc and 72 to 74 mm across, and the Dualside Cage Pro takes 72 to 75 mm.
• Hide a tracker: the Lezyne Matrix Air Cage and Topeak Ninja+ Cage Z with AirTag Mount hold an Apple AirTag on the frame side of the cage, out of sight.
• Carry tools too: Topeak's Ninja+ cages take a mini tool, CO2 kit or tube holder under the cage. The Ninja Master+ Cage X1 stores two tyre levers, and the Dualside Cage Pro set comes with a Nano 11 mini tool in a toolbox.
Rear mounts for triathlon
When the frame has no room, carry bottles behind the saddle. The Topeak Tri-Backup Pro V clamps to the V of your saddle rails, takes one or two bottles up to 750 cc and up to 2.5 kg, and hooks the bike onto the transition rack. Fit it with the Tri-Cage or the Tri-Cage 2, whose elastic halo steadies its forward-release design for a secure hold. The Alt-Position Cage Mount, which moves a cage 32 mm up or down, is made for Topeak's Tri-BackUp Elite mounts and for fitting two Ninja cages in a small frame, not the Pro V.
Bottle cages for bikepacking and dropper bikes
The Topeak VersaCage is a cargo cage for the fork or frame: it carries a dry bag or sleeping pad up to 3 kg and clamps to 20 to 60 mm tubes. The DP Mount clamps to a 22 to 27 mm dropper post and gives a bike with no room in the frame a spot for a cage or saddle bag. On a hot summer ride in Queensland, a second cage is often the difference between enough water and not. For bottles, see bike water bottles and cages.
