Description
Description
The Mammut Sender Twistlock Carabiner is a small, light locking D that looks after itself. Let go of the gate and the twist-lock sleeve spins back and locks without you touching it, so a belay anchor or a tie-in point is never left open because you were distracted. At 56 g it is the kind of locker you carry several of without thinking about it.
Certification and strength
- Major axis, gate closed: 26 kN
- Minor axis: 9 kN
- Gate open: 10 kN
- UIAA Safety Label
The Sender Twistlock is personal protective equipment. Load it along its spine with the gate locked, and read the instructions that come with it before first use.
What it is for
Mammut built the Sender Twistlock for long routes, and it scores top marks for multipitch and alpine climbing. That is where an auto-locking gate earns its place: building anchors on a big day in the Blue Mountains or the Warrumbungles, clipping a belay device at every stance, or tying a prusik on an alpine ridge in New Zealand with gloves on. It does a job at the sport crag too, as a belay or personal anchor locker.
Weight
The Sender Twistlock Carabiner weighs 56 g and measures 99 mm tall by 59.5 mm wide, so a handful of them clip onto one gear loop without crowding the rest of your rack.
Handling
The D shape keeps the load close to the spine and gives the gate room to open, with an 18 mm gap for a rope or a sling. A keylock nose means nothing hooks on the gate as you clip and unclip, which you appreciate when you are pulling it off a bolt hanger at the end of a long pitch. The twist-lock sleeve is knurled for grip and works one-handed: twist, open, clip, let go.
Inspection
Before each trip, open the gate and let it close: it should snap shut and the sleeve should rotate back and lock on its own. Check the inside of the bend for grooves worn by the rope, and retire any carabiner that has been dropped onto rock from height.
