Description
Description
The Mammut Carbon Probe 280 Speed Lock is a carbon fibre avalanche probe that reaches 280 cm, folds to 45 cm and weighs 275 g. Its Speed Lock system is designed for quick, reliable assembly, and when you extend it an audible click confirms the probe is correctly tensioned and fully engaged.
Who it's for
Ski tourers, splitboarders and guides who travel in deep snowpacks and want extra reach in a light carbon probe: the bigger slopes of New Zealand and Japan, and deep years on the Main Range. Every person in the party carries a probe alongside their transceiver and shovel.
How it performs in a search
A 13.25 mm carbon shaft, which Mammut describes as light and rigid, gives 280 cm of reach, and the drop-shaped tip is made to cut through avalanche debris without wasting energy. Mammut gives it precise probe scaling on both sides and a 360-degree visual depth guide, and the bottom section is highlighted orange as a visual guide as you near a buried victim.
Using it under pressure
Speed Lock is glove-friendly. Extend the probe and listen for the click that tells you it is tensioned correctly and fully engaged. It has a durable tensioning cord, the ergonomic handle can be clipped onto the extended probe so it stays out of the way, and the probe comes in a cover with an integrated emergency plan.
Certification and standards
The Carbon Probe 280 Speed Lock meets UIAA standard 157 for avalanche rescue probes.
Maintenance and checks
Assemble the probe fully before each season and each tour: it should click, lock firmly and stand straight. Check the cord for fraying and the carbon segments for cracks or splits, and let it dry out of its cover before storing it.
