The Deuter Futura 26 is a 26 litre hiking pack with a ventilated Aircomfort mesh back and a front zip that opens the whole main compartment. It is made for long, warm days on track and the odd hut-to-hut overnighter.

Who it's for

Day walkers who carry a full kit, and lightweight overnighters staying in huts. Deuter rate it five out of five for hiking. It suits a humid climb through the Border Ranges or a day on the Kosciuszko Main Range.

Capacity, and what actually fits

26 litres carries a 3 L bladder, a rain jacket, a fleece, lunch, a first aid kit and a camera, with the two lid compartments for snacks, sunscreen and a map. The pack measures 62 x 30 x 22 cm. Side compression straps cinch it down when it is half full.

How it carries

A flexi spring steel frame tensions the back mesh away from you, so air moves between your back and the pack on a hot climb, and the mesh now runs down into the lumbar area for a softer, wrapping fit. Pivoting ActiveFit shoulder straps follow your arm swing, padded and breathable hip fins with Pull-Forward adjustment take the weight onto your hips, and the shoulder straps and hip fins are padded in one continuous piece so nothing rubs. Stabiliser straps and a one-handed sternum buckle complete the harness.

Fitting it

The Futura 26 is one size, built for back lengths of 44-54 cm and walkers around 170-195 cm tall. Load a few kilos, settle the hip fins over your hip bones, then tension the shoulder straps and stabilisers.

Access and organisation

Load from the top under the drawcord and lid, or unzip the U-shaped front opening to reach the middle of the pack without unpacking it. Two big stretch side pockets hold bottles, a mesh front pocket takes a wet shell, and the hip fin pockets keep your phone in reach. Inside there is a wet compartment, plus a key clip, glasses stow and an ice axe and pole attachment.

1300 g empty. The steel frame and suspended mesh back are what keep a 6 kg load stable and your shirt drier, and they are worth carrying on any walk where the heat is the hard part.
