Description

The Deuter Freescape Lite 26 is a technical touring pack for steep, committing days on snow. It carries skis, axes and a rope without fuss, keeps your shovel and probe in a pocket you can open with gloves on, and has a back panel that snow simply does not stick to.

Who it's for

Ski tourers, splitboarders and snowshoers heading beyond the resort boundary: the Main Range out of Thredbo, Mount Feathertop, the Bogong High Plains, or a trip to Japan or New Zealand. Deuter rate it five out of five for ski touring and splitboarding. The 4-8 kg recommended load covers avalanche tools, skins, layers, food and a thermos.

Capacity, and what actually fits

26 litres in a 64 x 30 x 22 cm pack holds a shovel and probe in the front avalanche pocket, spare skins in the wet compartment, a puffer, a shell, lunch and a 3 L hydration bladder. Goggles sit in a fleece-lined pocket and a helmet rides in the detachable mesh holder.

How it carries

The LiteSnow back uses EVA foam pads covered in Spandex, with recesses between them so snow has nowhere to cling and melt into the pack. Padded shoulder straps, stabiliser straps and padded hip fins with an adjustable waist belt hold the load tight for kick turns and jump turns. Buckles are sized for gloved hands.

Fitting it

One size for back lengths of 44-54 cm, matched to tourers around 170-195 cm tall. Fit it over your shell with a few kilos inside, then snug the hip fins before the shoulder and stabiliser straps.

Access and organisation

The main compartment closes with a snow-safe roll-top, and side access lets you reach a layer or thermos without unrolling it.

  • Front pocket for avalanche equipment
  • Roll-top closure with side access
  • Fleece-lined goggle pocket and wet compartment
  • Diagonal and A-frame ski carry; snowshoe attachment

Weight

1000 g for a 26 litre pack with a full set of technical attachments. You carry the features you need for a serious line and nothing extra on the skin track.

Looking after it

The body is 210D polyamide with a water-repellent finish made without intentionally added PFAS, and the pack is bluepass and Green Button certified.
