Description

The Deuter Access Pro 65 is a long-haul travel pack in two parts: a 65 litre main bag that opens like a suitcase, and a daypack that zips off for the day and rides on your chest between airports and hostels. Pack once in Brisbane, live out of it through South-East Asia or Europe, and never dig to the bottom for a clean shirt.

Who it's for

Backpackers, gap-year travellers and anyone on a multi-week trip with buses, trains and flights in between. Deuter rate it five out of five for travel, and the recommended 8-15 kg load covers a full travel wardrobe plus shoes and a laptop. It handles walking between towns and the odd day hike, and it is built first and foremost for life on the move rather than for bush camping.

Capacity, and what actually fits

65 litres in the main bag takes two to three weeks of clothes in packing cubes, a toiletry bag, a light jacket and a pair of shoes in the separate removable shoe bag. The pack measures 68 x 36 x 30 cm. The daypack adds room for the things you want close: passport, phone, headphones, a water bottle and a laptop up to 13 inch in its padded sleeve.

How it carries

The Contact back system uses firm, shaped padding that sits snugly against you, on a round-profile spring steel frame that spreads the load. Padded hip fins with pull-forward adjustment take the weight onto your hips, and stabiliser straps draw the top of the pack in close. When you are walking from the station with both bags on, the daypack clips to docking loops on the shoulder straps and sits on your chest, balancing the load front to back.

Fitting it

The VariQuick system lets you slide the harness to suit back lengths from 42 to 62 cm, which Deuter match to body heights of 170-205 cm. Set it at home with 10 kg inside: hip fins on the hip bones first, then move the shoulder harness until the straps wrap your shoulders with no gap. That one adjustment is what makes a heavy travel bag comfortable for a long walk to the hostel.

Access and organisation

A round arch zip opens the whole front of the main compartment, so the pack lays flat on a bed and you see everything at once. The main zip takes a padlock through its anchor point, an inner zipped compartment keeps valuables out of sight, and internal compression straps hold folded clothes in place. Outside there are a front pocket, a side pocket, padded grab handles and detachable side compression straps. When you check it in, zip the stowable cover over the harness so straps cannot snag on the baggage belt.

  • Detachable daypack with Contact back padding and a 13 inch laptop compartment
  • Front zip access to the main compartment, padlock anchor point
  • Removable shoe bag
  • Inner zipped valuables compartment and internal compression straps
  • Stowable harness for checked luggage
  • Key clips on the main pack and the daypack

Weight

2540 g for the main pack and daypack together. That is the weight of a full harness, an adjustable frame and a second bag, and it is what lets 15 kg ride on your hips rather than drag off your shoulders. For a traveller, that trade pays for itself the first time you walk a few kilometres from the bus to a guesthouse.

Looking after it

The body combines 600D recycled polyester and 420D recycled polyamide with a DWR finish made without intentionally added PFAS, and it is bluepass and Green Button certified. Deuter back it with a 2-year warranty.
