Description

The Deuter Access 55 is a 55 litre travel backpack built like a suitcase you can carry: the front unzips to lay the whole main compartment open, the main zip takes a padlock, and the harness tucks away behind a cover when the pack goes on a baggage belt. It is made from recycled polyester and recycled polyamide on a padded Contact back.

Who it's for

Frequent travellers moving between hostels, trains and flights, with the odd day walk thrown in. Deuter rate it five out of five for travel. Think a month through South-East Asia, a working trip with a weekend in the Tasmanian highlands, or a backpacking loop around New Zealand, with 5-10 kg of clothes, shoes and toiletries on your back between bus stops.

Capacity, and what actually fits

55 litres holds a week or more of clothes in packing cells, a pair of walking shoes in the zipped shoe compartment at the base, a toiletry bag and a light jacket. Internal compression straps hold the load flat when you open the front, and an inner zipped compartment keeps passports and chargers separate. The pack measures 64 x 36 x 22 cm.

How it carries

A round-profile spring steel frame and Deuter's Contact back keep the pack close and stable, with padding where it meets your back. Padded shoulder straps, stabiliser straps and a two-way adjustable sternum strap handle the top, and padded hip fins with pull-forward adjustment take the weight onto your hips. Detachable side compression straps cinch the load when it is half full.

Fitting it

The Access 55 is one size, made for back lengths of 38-54 cm, a range Deuter match to travellers roughly 158-195 cm tall. Load it, set the hip fins on your hip bones, then pull the shoulder and stabiliser straps in.

Access and organisation

Front zip access means you never unpack the lot to reach the jumper at the bottom. At check-in, zip the harness away behind its cover so straps cannot snag on a conveyor, then clip a padlock through the anchor point on the main zip. Padded grab handles let you lift it like a bag off a luggage rack.

  • Suitcase-style front zip access to the main compartment
  • Lockable main zip with padlock anchor point
  • Stowable harness for flights and transfers
  • Separate shoe compartment
  • Inner zipped compartment and zipped side pocket
  • Internal compression straps; detachable external side compression straps

Weight

1640 g empty for 55 litres with a full harness, hip fins and a stowable cover. The frame and padded hip fins mean the weight rides on your hips on the walk from the station.

Looking after it

The fabric has a DWR finish made without intentionally added PFAS, and the pack is bluepass and Green Button certified. Deuter back it with a 2-year warranty.

How does the Deuter Access 55 open?
The Deuter Access 55 opens from the front like a suitcase, so the whole main compartment lies open. Internal compression straps hold your clothes in place while it is open.

Where do shoes go in the Deuter Access 55?
