Frequently Asked Questions

MS stands for magnetic south, one of the magnetic zones Silva balances its needles for. An MS compass is balanced for the southern zone, including Australia and New Zealand, so the needle swings level instead of dipping and dragging on the capsule. Every Silva baseplate and mirror compass we stock is an MS model.

The Ranger MS is a baseplate compass reading to 1 degree. The Ranger S MS adds a folding sighting mirror for more accurate bearings on distant landmarks. The Ranger SL MS is a compact mirror compass that folds to 5.9 x 4.1 x 1.4 cm for walkers counting grams.

The Silva Field MS or the Ranger MS. Both are clear baseplate compasses with a rotating housing, map scales and a declination scale, which is everything you need to learn to take a bearing from a map and walk it. A navigation course is the best place to start.
