Black Diamond Storm+ 750 Lumen Headlamp

The Black Diamond Storm+ 750 Lumen Headlamp is a long-distance rechargeable headlamp from Black Diamond's Storm range, sealed to IP67. The Storm+ puts out 750 lumens and reaches up to 149 m on high, runs up to 80 hours on low from a 2200 mAh battery, charges by USB-C and weighs 114 g.

Who it's for

Pick the Storm+ when you need to see a long way: night navigation off-track in the Victorian Alps, a moonless descent off Federation Peak, an alpine start on Mount Kosciuszko, or searching for the next reflector on a trail run that finishes after dark. It is the head torch for people whose plans do not stop when the sun goes down.

Brightness and runtime together

At full power the Storm+ gives 750 lumens for around 4.5 hours, lighting the track up to 149 m ahead. On low it keeps going for about 80 hours with a 24 m reach, enough for a week of camp evenings on one charge. A medium mode and brightness adjustment sit between the two, and mode memory remembers where you left it, so it comes back on at the level you were using rather than blasting you at full power.

Beam shape

The Storm+ carries three lenses: an Icon 700 spot lens, an Onsight flood lens and an RGB spot lens. Black Diamond pair a powerful spotlight for long-range illumination with peripheral white lighting for close-range jobs, and the RGB lens gives red, green or blue night vision for reading a map in a shared hut without waking everyone. SOS and strobe modes round it out.

Charging and battery

A 2200 mAh rechargeable battery charges through USB-C from a wall plug or a power bank. Pass-through charging lets you keep using it while it is plugged in, and the battery indicator on top tells you when to top up. The battery is serviceable. Digital Lockout keeps it from switching on inside your pack.

Weather resistance

Rated IP67, the Storm+ is dustproof and sealed to handle submersion to 1 m for 30 minutes. Its two oversized buttons are easy to work with gloves on.

Looking after it

Charge it after every trip, and give it a top-up every few months if it sits in the cupboard. Rinse off salt and grit with fresh water, dry it, and hand wash the recycled headband now and then.
