The Kid Comfort Active is the lightest child carrier Deuter make, on a compact ventilated Lite Aircontact back system. Stripped back and athletic in build, for parents who want to move quickly rather than carry every accessory.

Who it's for

The light one. At 2,680 g the Active is for parents who want to walk properly rather than shuffle - day walks, hinterland tracks, and getting out often because it is not a production to leave the house.

When a child is ready for it

Deuter rate this carrier for children from about nine months, and the milestone that matters is that your child can sit upright unaided. That is the test, not the birthday - some are ready at eight months and some at eleven.

Maximum child weight is 18 kg, plus 4 kg of luggage. In practice most families run out of a child's patience for sitting still long before they run out of carrier.

How it carries

The compact Lite Aircontact back system with VariQuick back-length adjustment keeps the weight close and the air moving, and adjusts across a range of back lengths so two adults can share one carrier. S-shaped soft-edge shoulder straps and conical hip fins finish a genuinely unisex fit.

A child is a live load that shifts every time they lean, which is why the back system on a carrier matters more than on a normal pack. Get the weight onto your hips and let the shoulder straps stop it tipping - the same rule as any load, and twice as noticeable when the load has opinions.

Keeping the child comfortable

Side entry and a simple, easily accessible safety harness - and side entry sounds like a detail until you have tried to lower a sleeping toddler in from above.

Sun and weather

Back length decides your size, not your height. Measure from the bony bump at the base of your neck to the top of your hip bones, and always adjust the carrier with the child in it - an empty carrier tells you nothing about how it will sit.

Comes with height-adjustable foot loops and a small removable washable chin pad.

The sun roof and rain cover are sold separately for this model. Under an Australian sun the roof is the one to add first - a child sitting still is getting far more sun than you are.

210D polyamide throughout - a tight weave that takes years of being dumped in car boots and dragged over gravel.

Especially with loads of more than ten kilograms and long walking times, individual adjustment is crucial for wearing comfort. This product has been manufactured by deuter without the use of per- and polyfluorinated chemicals with the aim of reducing reliance on substances that are harmful to the environment and health.
