The Orca Openwater Heatseeker Vest Womens is a sleeveless neoprene vest for open water swimmers. It is 2 mm thick with an open cell inner, and it puts the warmth where you lose it fastest, around your chest, back and belly, while your arms stay bare.
Who it's for
Women who feel the cold in their core before anywhere else. Slip the Heatseeker under your wetsuit for a winter swim at Brighton or a dawn lap of a mountain lake and you get a second layer of neoprene over your torso. On milder days, wear it alone: it keeps the breeze off between sets and the sun off your back and shoulders.
Buoyancy and flexibility
With no sleeves there is nothing across your shoulders to fight, so your stroke feels the same as it does in swimmers alone. Under a wetsuit the vest adds warmth without stiffening the arms of your suit. The inside of the vest is open cell material, which sits close against your skin.
Getting the size right
Size it on your chest, waist and hips:
- XS/8: chest 78–86 cm, waist 55–61 cm, hips 81–87 cm
- S/10: chest 83–89 cm, waist 61–67 cm, hips 87–93.5 cm
- M/12: chest 89–94 cm, waist 67–73.5 cm, hips 93.5–100 cm
- L/14: chest 94–99 cm, waist 73.5–80 cm, hips 100–106 cm
- XL/16: chest 99–104 cm, waist 80–86 cm, hips 106–112.5 cm
The vest should sit close all over, snug at the neck and the armholes and flat at the hem. A close fit lets your wetsuit slide on over the top and keeps water from washing through when you wear the vest alone.
Water temperature range
The Heatseeker earns its place at both ends of the year. In cold southern water, from a Melbourne winter to a Tasmanian lake, it goes under your wetsuit as extra insulation for your core. In mild water, from a Queensland winter to a southern summer, it works alone when a full suit would be too much.
