Description
The Mammut Workhorse Keylock is the quickdraw you rack up for a long day of sport routes: big, easy-to-grab carabiners, a sling that gives you something to hold, and clean keylock noses that do not snag on the way on or the way off.
Certification and strength
- Vertical breaking load: 26 kN
- Open gate breaking load: 10 kN
- Horizontal breaking load: 9 kN
- UIAA marked
The Workhorse Keylock is personal protective equipment. Read Mammut's user manual before you climb on it.
What it is for
Sport climbing first, with multipitch as its second job. It is the draw for clipping bolts at Nowra, Mount Arapiles or the Blue Mountains, and for working a route where the same draws get clipped, grabbed and fallen on all afternoon. The polyester sling has reinforced zones where wear happens, which is where the Workhorse name comes from.
Choose the 12 cm sling for straight bolt lines, and the 17 cm where the route wanders or the bolts sit under a lip and you want less rope drag. A set of six covers a lot of single-pitch routes; add single draws to fill out the rack.
Weight
The 17 cm Workhorse Keylock weighs 106 g per quickdraw.
Handling
The carabiner body is large and shaped to sit in your hand, with a ribbed grip zone on the straight gate so your thumb finds it without looking. Keylock noses on both carabiners mean nothing hooks the bolt hanger or the rope when you clean the route. The vari-width sling is broad enough to grab when you need to.
At the rope end, a protector holds the lower carabiner in position so it is always oriented for the clip, and an orange indicator shows that sling and protector are seated correctly on the carabiner.
Inspection
Before each day out, check the orange indicator is showing, the gates snap shut on their own, the noses are free of burrs and grooves, and the sling has no cuts, fraying or stiff, glazed patches.
