Description

The Sea to Summit Watercell X is a collapsible water container in tough recycled 400D nylon with a welded TPU lining, made in 4 L, 6 L, 10 L and 20 L sizes. Fill it at the tank, hang it from a tree or lay it on the tailgate, and pour, wash or shower from the cap.

What it is

A soft-sided water carrier that does the job of a jerry can and rolls up when it is empty. The wide mouth takes a tap, a creek or a filter hose without a funnel. The low-profile 63 mm cap is a tap as well as a lid: twist it with one hand to go from a trickle for brushing teeth to a full pour for the billy. Screw on the shower fitting, which lives on the carry strap so it is always there, hang the Watercell in the sun for the afternoon and you have a bush shower.

Who it's for

Base camps, paddle trips and dry camps, anywhere the water is a walk from the tent or has to come in with you. Think K'gari beach camps, a week on the Noosa River, or the long dry stretches of the Larapinta where you haul water for the night.

  • 4 L (170 g): a day's cooking and drinking water for one or two, or the shower.
  • 6 L (195 g): an overnight camp for two.
  • 10 L (245 g): the family camp kitchen for a day.
  • 20 L (335 g): base camp and group trips, where one fill does the lot.

Key details

Full, the Watercell X measures 31 x 21 x 10 cm in the 4 L, 36.5 x 23.5 x 10.5 cm in the 6 L, 44 x 29 x 11 cm in the 10 L and 53 x 39 x 14.5 cm in the 20 L. Internal baffles keep it flat instead of letting it balloon into a ball, so it stacks in the boot, sits still in the bottom of a canoe and lies steady on a table.

Empty, it packs to 26 x 11.5 x 6.5 cm (4 L), 29.5 x 12.5 x 7.5 cm (6 L), 32.3 x 13 x 7.5 cm (10 L) or 42 x 16.6 x 7 cm (20 L).

The adjustable TPU strap and welded lash points give you somewhere to grab it, hang it or tie it down. The seams are RF-welded, not stitched, and the materials are BPA-free, PVC-free and non-PFAS. The tap thread inside the cap is an 8 mm BSPT fitting.

You can freeze water in a Watercell X for the esky: leave room for the ice to expand. Keep very hot water out of it.

Looking after it

Wash it with warm water and dish soap, rinse well, and hang it upside down with the cap off until it is completely dry. The wide mouth is what makes that easy. Skip the boiling water. If it has carried cordial or wine, effervescent peroxide cleaning tablets lift the residue.
