The Arva Spark 240 is a light, compact aluminium avalanche probe built around Arva's PIN LOCK handle: throw out the sections, pull, and the probe is tensioned and locked at its full 2.40 m. At 250 g and with short 30 cm sections, it is the probe you will happily carry on every tour.

Who it's for

Backcountry skiers and snowboarders, from first-season tourers to regulars on the Main Range, in the Victorian high country and further afield in New Zealand and Japan. How it performs in a search

Eight 30 cm sections of 12 mm, 7001 T6 aluminium give 2.40 m of reach, on a stainless steel tension cable. Markings on the probe indicate snow depth, so you can call out how deep a strike is to whoever is digging.

Using it under pressure

The PIN LOCK handle does the work: one pull on the handle deploys and locks the probe. When the digging starts, the handle snaps onto the tube. The Spark 240 comes in a pouch printed with step-by-step avalanche rescue instructions.
