Description

Mammut Sender Screwgate Carabiner is a light, compact locking D for climbers who count grams on long days: 48 g of aluminium with a snag-free key lock nose and a screw sleeve that is easy to work with cold fingers. It is the locker to rack for belay and abseil set-ups and anchors on a multipitch at Arapiles or the Blue Mountains, or on an alpine route in New Zealand.

Certification and strength

  • Major axis, gate closed: 26 kN
  • Gate open: 10 kN
  • Minor axis: 9 kN
  • Standards: EN 12275:2013 and UIAA 121:2018, certified under the EU PPE Regulation 2016/425

A carabiner reaches its full rated strength only when it is closed, locked and loaded along its length.

What it is for

The Sender Screwgate is built around multipitch and alpine climbing, where every piece on the harness is carried all day. Use it wherever a locking carabiner belongs: belaying, abseiling and building anchors. The compact D shape is easy to handle and takes up little room on a crowded harness.

Weight

48 g per carabiner. Size: 99 mm tall and 59.5 mm wide.

Handling

  • Key lock nose: no hook to catch on slings, bolt hangers or the rope as you clip and unclip.
  • Gate opening: 19.5 mm.
  • Orange warning band: visible whenever the screw sleeve is undone, so an unlocked gate shows at a glance.
  • Screw lock: easy to operate, even when the carabiner is dirty or iced up.

Inspection

Check the lock regularly: it must screw closed fully and must not jam. Retire the carabiner after contact with aggressive chemicals, or if it shows corrosion, heavy wear or soiling you cannot clean off, such as grease, oil or bitumen. The Sender Screwgate is personal protective equipment, so read the instructions that come with it before use.

Looking after it

Wash off dirt and salt in lukewarm water with a neutral soap, rinse well and dry it out of direct sun. Lubricate the locking mechanism with a silicone-based lubricant, and store it cool, dry and dark, away from heat and chemicals.
