Description
The Mammut Nirvana 18 Women is a compact freeride ski backpack: 18 litres, 830 g, a women's harness on Mammut's shorter back length, and a front compartment kept just for your avalanche safety gear. The main fabric is recycled and every fabric in the pack is PFC-free.
Who it's for
Women who ride off the lifts and want the smallest pack that still carries a shovel and probe properly. Side-country laps at Perisher, a short hike off the top of Thredbo, a powder morning at a New Zealand club field: days where you want your rescue gear on your back and not much else getting in the way of the skiing.
The Nirvana is Mammut's snow-sports pack through and through, and the 18 is its compact women's size.
Capacity, and what actually fits
Eighteen litres is a lean riding kit. Shovel and probe go in the front compartment, away from everything else. The main compartment takes a warm layer, goggles, a drink and something to eat. A hydration bladder fits too if you would rather sip on the chairlift than stop.
If you carry more layers or head out for longer, the Nirvana 22 Women and Nirvana 28 Women give you more room with the same women's fit.
How it carries
The carrying system is shaped for freedom of movement as much as comfort, so the pack stays close through the turns. A hip belt and sternum strap hold it steady on the ride out. Skis and splitboards carry A-frame, a separate snowboard attachment takes a board, and there are attachments for an ice tool and poles.
Fitting it
The women's fit is where this pack earns its place: shoulder straps shaped for a woman's frame, a tailored hip belt and Mammut's size S back length, 43.5 cm. Measure from the bony bump at the base of your neck down to the top of your hip bones; around 43.5 cm is the sweet spot. If a unisex pack has always ridden up onto your shoulders or pressed on your neck, a shorter back and shaped straps are the fix.
Access and organisation
Your avalanche safety gear lives in its own front compartment, so it never ends up buried under your layers. Inside the pack there is a sleeve for the Mammut Back Protector, sold separately, and an SOS label printed with emergency instructions.
Weight
830 g empty for an 18 litre pack with a dedicated avalanche compartment, full ski and board carry and a women's harness. The outer is a robust recycled fabric of 90% polyamide and 10% polyester.
