Description

The Topeak Midloader is a bikepacking frame bag in 3 L, 4.5 L or 6 L. It straps under your top tube with hook-and-loop fasteners, opens through a water-resistant zip on each side, and carries up to 6.5 kg low and central in the frame.

Who it's for

Bikepackers and gravel riders who want the dense gear in the middle of the bike, where it changes the handling least. Tools, pump, spare tubes, battery pack, stove and food all belong here, which leaves your seat bag and bar bag for the light, bulky kit. It is a good first bag for an overnighter on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, and it earns its place on a long day ride as well.

Fitting it to your bike

Measure the inside of your front triangle along the underside of the top tube, then pick the size whose top edge fits:

  • 3 L - 37.5 cm along the top edge, 28 cm along the bottom edge, 12 cm high
  • 4.5 L - 46 cm along the top edge, 36 cm along the bottom edge, 12 cm high
  • 6 L - 54.5 cm along the top edge, 44 cm along the bottom edge, 13.5 cm high

All three sizes are 6 cm wide, so your knees clear the bag as you pedal. The straps fit a top tube of 45 to 66 mm, a down tube of 38 to 70 mm and a seat tube of 28 to 60 mm. Check the height against your bottle cages: the bag hangs 12 to 13.5 cm below the top tube, and on a small frame that can meet the top of a tall bottle. We'd put protective film on the frame where the straps sit, so grit does not dull the paint.

Capacity and what fits

  • 3 L - pump, tubes, multi-tool, snacks and a phone
  • 4.5 L - the same, plus a rain jacket or a battery pack and cables
  • 6 L - tools, a compact stove and gas, and a day's food

The maximum load is 6.5 kg in every size. A zip on each side means you reach in from whichever side of the bike you are standing on.

Weatherproofing

The Midloader is made from polyethylene and nylon that is water repellent and stain resistant, with water-resistant zips. It shrugs off showers, road spray and creek-crossing splash. For a phone or a down jacket in all-day rain, we'd slip it into a small dry bag inside.

Measure along the underside of your top tube inside the front triangle. The 3 L Topeak Midloader is 37.5 cm along its top edge, the 4.5 L is 46 cm and the 6 L is 54.5 cm. Choose the longest size that fits inside that measurement.

Will the Topeak Midloader fit oversized or carbon frame tubes?
The Topeak Midloader straps fit a top tube of 45 to 66 mm, a down tube of 38 to 70 mm and a seat tube of 28 to 60 mm. Put protective film under the straps on a carbon or painted frame to guard the finish against grit.

Can I still use my bottle cages with the Topeak Midloader?
The Topeak Midloader hangs 12 cm below the top tube in the 3 L and 4.5 L sizes and 13.5 cm in the 6 L, leaving the lower part of the frame triangle open. On a small frame, a side-entry cage or a shorter bottle gives more room.
