Description
The Deuter Shortrail III is a running belt with a 3 litre bag on the back: room for a 1.5 litre hydration bladder, snacks, a phone and keys, plus a pole holder so you can stow trekking poles at a run. It weighs 175 g and is made from recycled polyamide minirip and stretch mesh.
Who it's for
Trail runners and fast hikers who would rather carry water on their hips than their back. Deuter rate it five out of five for trail running and four for hiking. It suits a hot morning run at Mt Coot-tha, or a fast-packing day where you want poles for the climbs and free hands on the flat.
Capacity and fit
3 litres of space holds a 1.5 L hydration bladder plus gels, a phone and a light wind shell. A zipped front compartment and an inside valuables pocket keep cards and keys separate, with a key clip so they do not bounce out. The waist belt is cut to size: trim it once for your waist so there are no loose ends flapping, and the bag sits snug and still when you run. The bag measures 20 x 52 x 10 cm.
Drinking and refilling
A 1.5 L bladder rides low on your back, where its weight is steadiest on the move, and the tube routes round to the front. The bladder is sold separately. Fill it before you clip the belt on, then top up at a tank or creek with a filter on the way.
Looking after it
The fabric is made without intentionally added PFAS, and the bag is bluepass and Green Button certified. Deuter back it with a 2-year warranty.
