Description
Description
The Mammut Classic HMS Screwgate is a pear-shaped locking carabiner: the one that lives on your belay loop. The wide top gives a Munter hitch or a belay device room to work, the screwgate locks with a few turns, and a band of orange tells you at a glance if you forgot to do it up.
Certification and strength
- Vertical breaking load: 24 kN
- Open gate breaking load: 8 kN
- Horizontal breaking load: 9 kN
- UIAA marked
The Classic HMS Screwgate is personal protective equipment. Read Mammut's user manual before you climb on it.
What it is for
Belaying and anchors. HMS is the pear shape made for the Munter hitch, and that same broad, rounded top lets a rope run smoothly through a belay device and spreads the wear. Use it to belay at the gym, to build a belay station on a multipitch at Mount Arapiles or Frog Buttress, or as the master point locker on a top-rope anchor.
It is a medium-size carabiner, big enough to handle with cold fingers and to take a couple of clove hitches side by side.
Weight
The Classic HMS Screwgate weighs 63 g. It is made from aluminium, with a gate opening of 24 mm.
Handling
The nose is keylock, smooth where the gate meets the body, so it slides off a belay loop, a sling or a bolt hanger without hooking. The screw sleeve is knurled for grip and keeps turning when there is grit or ice in the thread.
Orange is the warning colour. When the sleeve is wound down and the gate can open, the orange band is showing. Screw it shut and the orange disappears. Make that your last look before you say "on belay".
Inspection
Before each day out, check that the gate springs closed on its own, the sleeve screws fully over the nose, and the rope-bearing surface has no sharp grooves or burrs.
