Frequently Asked Questions
For resort skiing you need a waterproof jacket and pants, thermal base layers, warm waterproof gloves, ski socks (one pair, not two), goggles and a helmet. A small backpack is handy for water and a spare layer. Hire skis, boots and poles until you know what you like.
Each person needs an avalanche beacon, probe and shovel. You also need a touring pack big enough to carry them, plus touring skis or a splitboard with skins. Most importantly, take an avalanche course such as AST 1 before heading past the resort boundary.
Follow the care label. In general, use a gentle cold cycle with a technical wash, and air-dry rather than tumble dry. Take batteries out of heated socks before washing, and never machine wash heated gloves. Store gear dry over summer.

• Packs: 15–24 L suits resort days and short tours. 28–35 L suits full touring days with avalanche tools, skins and a spare layer. See snow backpacks.
• Warmth: If your feet or hands run cold, look at heated gloves and socks before you buy a thicker glove.
• Water: Hoses freeze. An insulated snow hydration pack keeps water flowing on cold lifts.
What we stock
Deuter's Freerider, Freescape and Trans Alpine packs make up most of our ski backpacks. Mammut adds the Nirvana and Nordwand packs and Arva adds the Ride, Tour and Rescuer packs. For avalanche gear, we carry Mammut Barryvox and Arva beacons, probes and shovels, including two Arva Snow Safety Packs. Therm-ic covers heated socks, gloves and batteries.
Snow gear for Australian conditions
The Aussie season runs roughly June to September, and the snow is often wet and the wind strong. Waterproof gloves and a dry spare layer matter more here than the coldest-rated gear. Many of us then travel to New Zealand or Japan, where colder, deeper snow and bigger terrain make avalanche kit and a proper touring pack essential.
