Description

The Katadyn Pocket Maintenance Kit (20648) is the official service kit for the Katadyn Pocket hand-pump water filter. The Katadyn Pocket Maintenance Kit holds the O-rings, gaskets, check valve parts, screws, pin, hose clip, measuring gauge and silicone lubricant for servicing a Pocket, and it suits the Pocket, Pocket Black Edition and Pocket Army.

Who it's for

Pocket owners who want their filter working smoothly for years to come. If the handle has started to feel stiff, a seal looks tired, or you are packing for a long trip into the Kimberley or a remote overseas trek where nothing can be replaced on the way, this is the kit to have in the bag. It also makes sense as the first job when you pull a Pocket out of long storage.

What's in the kit

  • 1 O-ring for the check valve
  • 2 balls
  • 1 socket-head cap screw
  • 4 gaskets
  • 2 cylinder screws
  • 1 pin
  • 3 O-rings for the pump tappet
  • 1 measuring gauge
  • 1 hose clip
  • 1 tube of silicone lubricant

Maintenance

The silicone lubricant is the part you will reach for most. Katadyn's manual has you clean old build-up off the black O-ring on the pump handle and lubricate it, and put a drop on the pump base thread when you reassemble. The measuring gauge tells you when the ceramic is spent: slip it over the element after cleaning, and if the gap fits over the ceramic, it is time for a new cartridge. A handle that is hard to push usually means the ceramic needs cleaning rather than new seals, so check that first.

Looking after it

Before long-term storage, clean the ceramic, rinse the sleeve, then lubricate the O-rings and the threads on the element and pump base. Keep the spare O-rings and small parts sealed in their packet in the bottom of the Pocket's carry bag, so they are there when you need them on the track.

FAQ's

Which filters does the Katadyn Pocket Maintenance Kit fit?
The Katadyn Pocket Maintenance Kit (20648) fits the Katadyn Pocket Water Filter, the Pocket Black Edition and the Pocket Army hand-pump filters.

What is in the Katadyn Pocket Maintenance Kit?
The Katadyn Pocket Maintenance Kit holds a check valve O-ring, two balls, a socket-head cap screw, four gaskets, two cylinder screws, a pin, three pump tappet O-rings, a measuring gauge, a hose clip and silicone lubricant.

Does the Katadyn Pocket Maintenance Kit include a ceramic cartridge?
No. The Katadyn Pocket Maintenance Kit is seals, small parts, a measuring gauge and lubricant. The ceramic element is sold separately as the Katadyn Pocket Ceramic Replacement Cartridge.

What is the measuring gauge in the Katadyn Pocket Maintenance Kit for?
The measuring gauge in the Katadyn Pocket Maintenance Kit checks how much ceramic is left. If the gap in the gauge fits over the cleaned ceramic, the element is spent and needs replacing.

Why is my Katadyn Pocket filter hard to pump?
A Katadyn Pocket filter that is hard to pump usually has clogged ceramic pores. Clean the ceramic first; if the stroke is still rough, clean and lubricate the pump handle O-ring with the kit's silicone lubricant.

How often should I service my Katadyn Pocket filter?
Service a Katadyn Pocket filter whenever the handle stiffens or a seal looks worn, and every time it goes into long-term storage: clean the ceramic, then lubricate the O-rings and threads.
