Description
The Mammut Crag Sender is a lightweight in-mould climbing helmet with an EPS foam core, a thin outer shell and Kevlar reinforcement at the points that take the most load. The Crag Sender meets EN 12492, has large vents with an internal air channel, a rear adjustment wheel and holders for a headlamp. We stock the 56-61 cm size in White and Jade.
What it is
A foam-bodied climbing helmet built for days when you want protection you barely feel. The EPS core is moulded straight into the outer shell, Kevlar reinforces the load points, and the shape wraps well down over the front, back and sides of your head rather than perching on top.
Who it's for
Sport climbers first. Mammut rate the Crag Sender 6 out of 6 for sport climbing and 4 out of 6 for alpine routes, ice and mixed, and via ferrata. Picture a full day of redpoint burns in the Blue Mountains, a humid evening session at Kangaroo Point, or a long weekend on the Nowra sandstone: this is the helmet that stays on your head at the belay instead of hanging off your harness.
We carry the 56-61 cm size. Run a soft tape around your head just above the eyebrows; if you measure 56 cm or more, this is your size, and the rear wheel takes up the slack.
Key details
- In-mould construction: EPS foam core with Kevlar reinforcement
- Coverage extends over the front, back and sides
- Meets EN 12492, the European standard for mountaineering helmets
- Large vents linked by an internal air channel
- Wheel adjustment at the back and a fully adjustable chin strap
- Extra padding inside for a close, even fit
- Headlamp holder at the front and elastic loops at the back
- Carry bag included
Beyond the standard, Mammut put the Crag Sender through their own extra testing, with particular attention to how the helmet holds up after a knock to the side, which is where a swing into the wall usually lands.
How it compares
Next to the Mammut Skywalker 3.0, the Crag Sender is the lighter, lower-profile choice for sport climbing. The Skywalker 3.0 wraps EPP and EPS foam in a tough ABS hard shell and is rated 6 out of 6 for via ferrata, so it shrugs off being thrown in a pack or scraped along a cable route. Pick the Crag Sender if your climbing is mostly bolted rock and you want to forget you are wearing it.
Looking after it
An in-mould foam helmet is light because the foam does the work, so keep it away from heavy loads: pack it at the top of your bag or in the carry bag, never under a rope and a rack. Store it out of strong sun between trips, and retire it after a hard impact even when nothing shows on the outside.
