Description

The approach pole - built for the walk in, where the ground is rough, the pack is heavy and the poles spend half the day folded on the outside of it. Alloy in the top section where the clamp bites, carbon below to keep the swing weight down.

Alloy up top, carbon below

The upper section is 7075-T6 aluminium, which is the section the Powerlock clamps onto and the one that takes the most handling. Carbon runs through the lower sections where the weight saving does the most good. It is a sensible split for a pole that gets packed and unpacked all day.

Folds to 40 cm and unfolds itself

Click and fix. The FX Lite mechanism pulls all four sections into a solid column on its own, so the poles come out of the pack and into use in seconds - which is the whole point on an approach where you keep hitting hands-on sections.

Foam grip for the sweaty walk in

The Trek Pro 245 grip here is foam rather than cork, with an extended grip zone. Foam keeps its grip when your hands are wet, which on a steep humid approach is most of the morning.

Weight

482 g the pair (241 g per pole).

FAQ's

How much do they weigh - is that per pole or the pair?
482 g for the pair, and 241 g per pole if you are matching against a spec sheet.

Why mix aluminium and carbon?
The alloy upper takes the clamp load and the handling; the carbon lowers keep the weight and swing feel down. On an approach pole that gets packed and deployed constantly, the durability up top is worth the few grams.

What length range?
115 cm to 135 cm on the Powerlock 3.0, which covers most adult walkers on mixed terrain.

How small does it fold?
40 cm - inside a daypack rather than strapped to the outside.

How does it compare to the Vario Summit?
The Summit is carbon through all four sections with a cork grip. The Approach has an alloy upper and a foam grip, which suits rougher handling and wetter hands. Same mechanism and the same length band.
