Gear Aid Tenacious Tape Silnylon Patches solve the problem every ultralight walker meets eventually: ordinary repair tape will not stay on a silicone-coated tent. These patches are 40D siliconised ripstop nylon with a silicone-based adhesive, so they grip silnylon and silpoly properly. Each pack holds two sheer 7.6 x 12.7 cm sheets that weigh next to nothing in the repair kit and can be trimmed to fit any tear.
What it fixes
- Rips and punctures in silnylon and silpoly tent flies and floors
- Tears in silicone-coated tarps and bivy bags
- Holes in silnylon stuff sacks and pack liners
- Snags in ultralight packs made of silicone-treated fabric
The patches are sheer grey, so they sit quietly on almost any colour of fly. They are made for silicone-treated fabric specifically, because only silicone sticks well to silicone. A stake through the floor on the Overland Track or a branch through the fly on the Australian Alps Walking Track can be patched at camp and forgotten about.
How to use it
- Wipe the area around the damage with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry completely.
- Cut a piece that covers the tear with about 13 mm to spare on every side, and round off the corners so they cannot lift.
- Peel off the backing, centre the patch over the damage and lay it flat.
- Press firmly from the middle outwards to push out air bubbles.
No sewing and no heat: the patches go on at room temperature and the gear is ready to use straight away.
Looking after it
A patched tent or stuff sack can be washed as normal; the silicone coating on the patch handles the washing machine and the weather. The patch is permanent, so place it carefully. Keep spare sheets in their original envelope so the backing stays clean.
