Description
The Gear Aid Heroclip is a gear clip with a second trick: a carabiner with a hook that folds out of the spine, swivels all the way round and hangs your gear from a branch, a rail or the edge of a table. It is made from machine-cut anodised aluminium and comes in four sizes.
What it is
A gear clip and a hook in one piece. Clip the gate to your pack, swing the hook out and hang the pack off the ground. The hook has a rubber tip that grips flat surfaces, the joints pivot so it reaches into awkward spots, and the whole thing folds back to the size of a carabiner when you are done.
Who it's for
Anyone who is sick of putting a pack down in the mud. Walkers hang a pack from a tree at a wet campsite on the Great North Walk. Campers hang a lantern in the tent or a water bladder from a branch. Travellers hang a toiletry bag from a towel rail in a hostel bathroom. Paddlers clip a bottle under the deck lines.
Heroclip holds gear, not people. It is not a climbing carabiner and has no place in a climbing, rescue or safety system.
Key details
- Mini: holds 18 kg, weighs 20 g, 5.7 cm tall closed and 10.7 cm open.
- Small: holds 22 kg, weighs 31 g, 7.6 cm tall closed and 14.2 cm open.
- Medium: holds 27 kg, weighs 57 g, 9.5 cm tall closed and 18.4 cm open.
- Large: holds 45 kg, weighs 94 g, 13.3 cm tall closed and 23.1 cm open.
The clip gate is wider than the gate on a standard carabiner, so it goes over a thick pack handle or a fence rail. Hang it from something solid: the clip is only as strong as the branch it is on.
How it compares
All four sizes work the same way, so choose by what you are hanging. The Mini suits keys, a head torch or a small speaker. The Small takes a water bottle or a day pack. The Medium is the one for a loaded overnight pack or a duffle, and the Large is for the heavy items: a full expedition pack or a wet bag of dive gear.
