Description

The Nemo Dragonfly OSMO is a fully freestanding three-season backpacking tent, from 948 g minimum weight in the one-person version. It uses recycled aluminium poles on a hubbed frame, and Nemo's OSMO fabric, which the brand rates at three times less wet stretch than standard nylon. The two- and three-person versions have two doors and two vestibules.

Who it's for

Walkers who want a genuinely light tent that still stands up on its own. Freestanding matters more than it sounds: on rock platforms, wooden tent decks, sand, and the hard ground you get in an Australian summer, a tent that needs its ends staked out is a problem.

If you camp mostly on soft ground and count every gram, the semi-freestanding Hornet saves around 130 g in the 1P. If you want more room than weight, the Dagger is the roomier tent in the same family.

Key features

  • Fully freestanding - it holds its shape unstaked, so you can pitch it on a platform, shift it once it is up, or shake it out without dismantling anything.
  • Recycled aluminium hubbed poles. Nemo's Elements hardware angles the crossbar upward before tensioning, and the Precurve system pulls the roof close to horizontal - which is what turns headroom into usable headroom rather than a peak you sit under.
  • OSMO fabric - Nemo's 100% recycled poly-nylon, PFAS-free, rated at four times longer water repellency and three times less stretch when wet. In practice the fly sags less overnight in rain.
  • Two doors and two vestibules on the 2P and 3P, so nobody climbs over anybody at 2am.
  • 10D nylon ripstop and no-see-um mesh canopy, with a 1500 mm rated OSMO rainfly.

Choosing a size

The 1P gives 1.9 sq m of floor with one door, at 948 g. The 2P steps to 2.7 sq m with two doors at 1.2 kg. The 3P is 3.8 sq m and 111 cm of peak height rather than 102 cm, which is where sitting up properly becomes comfortable. Weight per person falls as capacity rises, so a 2P shared between two walkers is lighter each than two 1P tents.

How it compares in the Nemo range

Hornet is lighter and semi-freestanding. Dragonfly is freestanding with more usable interior volume for a modest weight penalty. Dagger is the roomiest of the three and the heaviest. All three now use OSMO fabric, so the choice is about structure and space rather than materials.

FAQ's

Is the Nemo Dragonfly OSMO freestanding?
Yes, the Dragonfly OSMO is fully freestanding. It holds its shape without being staked out, so it can be pitched on rock platforms, wooden tent decks or hard ground, and moved once it is standing. That is the main structural difference from the lighter Hornet, which is semi-freestanding.

How much does the Nemo Dragonfly weigh?
Minimum weight is 948 g for the 1P, 1.2 kg for the 2P and 1.49 kg for the 3P. Packed weight, which includes stakes, guylines and the stuff sack, is 1.2 kg, 1.41 kg and 1.72 kg. Minimum weight is the figure used to compare tents; packed weight is what goes in your pack.

Should I buy the Dragonfly or the Hornet?
Choose the Dragonfly if you want a freestanding tent with more usable interior volume, and the Hornet if you want the lightest option and mostly camp on ground that takes a stake. The Hornet is semi-freestanding, so its foot end must be pegged out to hold its shape.

Does the Dragonfly have two doors?
The 2P and 3P have two doors and two vestibules, each about 0.9 sq m. The 1P has a single door and vestibule. For two people sharing, the second door is the feature most worth having on a tent this light, because neither person has to climb over the other.

What is OSMO fabric?
OSMO is Nemo's 100% recycled poly-nylon composite. Nemo rates it at four times longer water repellency and three times less stretch when wet than comparable fabrics, and it is made without PFAS. The practical effect is a fly that sags less overnight in sustained rain and needs re-tensioning less often.

Do I need a footprint for the Nemo Dragonfly?
A footprint is not required, as the floor is OSMO ripstop with a waterproof coating. A footprint mainly extends floor life on abrasive ground such as granite or gravel, and adds weight. On grass and duff most walkers skip it; on rocky sites it is cheap insurance.
