Who it's for
This is the layer that covers most of the Australian year on its own. At 230 gsm it is warm enough under a shell on an alpine day and breathable enough to keep wearing when the weather turns mild, which means it does not sit in the cupboard for eight months.
The other reason to own it is multi-day trips. Merino resists odour where synthetic base layers do not, so one top covers a week and you carry less.
Fit and layering
A crew neck cut to sit next to skin without binding, so it layers flat under a fleece or a shell. At 195 g it is barely there in a pack, and it looks like a normal top rather than technical kit when you are off the hill.
Fabric and construction
100% fine Australian merino, 230 g per square metre, at 20.5 micron. That micron figure is the one that matters for comfort - it is what makes the difference between a top you wear against skin all day and the wool jumper you remember itching as a child. Merino works as a thermo-regulator rather than a simple insulator, moving moisture as vapour and continuing to hold warmth when damp.
Packability and weight
195 g.
Care
Cool wash, dry flat, keep it out of the dryer. It needs washing much less often than synthetic, and airing it overnight is usually enough.
