The Orca Openwater Heatseeker Vest Mens is a sleeveless neoprene vest for open water swimmers, made to go under your wetsuit or to be worn alone. It is 2 mm thick with an open cell inner, and it wraps your chest, back and belly in neoprene while your arms stay bare.
Who it's for
Swimmers whose suit is right everywhere except the core. Pull the Heatseeker on under your wetsuit before a July swim at Bondi or a dawn lap of Lake Jindabyne and your torso gets a second layer of neoprene. When the water is mild, wear it alone over your swimmers: it takes the edge off the wind between sets and keeps the sun off your back and shoulders.
Buoyancy and flexibility
No sleeves means nothing pulling across your shoulders, so your catch and recovery feel the way they do in swimmers alone. Under a wetsuit the vest adds warmth without stiffening the arms of your suit. The open cell inner sits close against your skin.
Getting the size right
Size it on your chest and waist:
- XS: chest 76–85 cm, waist 71–76 cm
- S: chest 85–94 cm, waist 76–81 cm
- M: chest 94–103 cm, waist 81–86 cm
- L: chest 103–112 cm, waist 86–91.5 cm
- XL: chest 112–120.5 cm, waist 91.5–96.5 cm
- XXL: chest 120.5–129.5 cm, waist 96.5–101.5 cm
The vest should sit close all over, snug at the neck and the armholes and flat at the hem. A close fit lets your wetsuit slide on over the top and keeps water from washing through when you wear the vest alone.
Water temperature range
The Heatseeker earns its place at both ends of the year. In cold southern water, from a Melbourne winter to a Tasmanian lake, it goes under your wetsuit as extra insulation for your core. In mild water, from a Queensland winter to a southern summer, it works alone when a full suit would be too much.
