The CamelBak Ambush Mil Spec Crux is a tough, low-profile hydration pack: 3 litres of water, 3 litres of kit, and a reservoir you fill without unpacking a thing. CamelBak designed it for the US Marine Corps, and we carry it in Coyote and Multicam.

Who it's for

Anyone who needs plenty of water on a pack that stays out of the way. Shooters on a hot day at the range, hunters working a ridge in the high country, reservists, cadets and emergency service volunteers on a long shift in the heat. The Ambush sits close to your back with a low stack height, so it does not snag on scrub or knock around when you move quickly.

Capacity, and what actually fits

Two loads, kept separate. The Crux Short reservoir holds 3 L (100 oz is 2.96 L, hence the name), which is a proper drink for a long, hot morning. The cargo side takes another 3 litres, split between a zip pocket at the bottom and the pocket under the top fill flap.

Three litres of cargo is the essentials: a first aid kit, phone, head torch, snacks and a spare pair of gloves. It is a hydration pack first, built for the kit you actually carry rather than a day's worth of layers.

How it carries

A lightweight webbing harness keeps the weight tight, and an adjustable sternum strap stops the shoulder straps from sliding out wide. The shoulder straps release at the side, so the pack comes off in a hurry without dragging it over your head or a helmet. D-rings for tube management keep the drinking tube exactly where your mouth expects it.

Fitting it

The Ambush is one size, shaped to suit a broad range of torso lengths. Fill the reservoir first, then set the shoulder straps so the pack rides high between your shoulder blades, and clip the sternum strap across your chest. Three litres of water changes how any pack hangs, so fit it full, not empty.

Access and organisation

External fill is the reason to pick this pack. Side zips open straight onto the reservoir's fill port, so you top up from a tap, a tank or a jerry can with the reservoir and tube still in place. Top and bottom zip pockets split the small things you reach for from the things you do not, and low-profile MountainMOLLE webbing on the bottom pocket takes an extra pouch.

The Multicam Ambush weighs 480 g, which is light for a pack cut from 500D Double-rip Cordura. Almost everything else you carry is water, and every litre you drink takes a kilo off your back.
